McLaren builds every road car around a carbon fiber tub, and that has one consequence owners should genuinely find reassuring: the body panels hanging off it are not structural. A hit that would deform the unibody of a conventional car frequently damages panels and subframes on a McLaren while leaving the tub untouched. Superformed aluminum panels, and why they behave differently

McLaren's body panels are superformed aluminum, made very thin because they carry no structural load. That produces the shapes these cars have and it changes how the panels respond to damage: thin aluminum has little of the memory that steel does, work-hardens quickly as it moves, and shows any technique error in the reflection rather than in the shape.

Panel work is done in a separated aluminum area with dedicated tooling and consumables. Straightening heat is measured rather than judged, because aluminum permanently loses strength above its specified range while looking entirely normal, and the repair sequence matters as much as the technique on a panel this thin.

The upside for owners is real: a panel that is not structural is a panel where a competent repair is genuinely equivalent to a replacement, and on a car with McLaren's parts lead times that difference can be weeks.

Dihedral doors and the nose

The dihedral doors hinge from the tub and swing up and out, which makes their alignment a function of the structure rather than of the hinge adjustment. After any repair touching the aperture or the front structure, door alignment and closing behavior are verified against specification rather than adjusted until they seem right.

The nose is the other McLaren-specific reality of living in Los Angeles. These cars are very low, the front clamshell and splitter meet driveway aprons on the hillside streets constantly, and the nose-lift system is a habit rather than a guarantee. Cosmetic splitter and lip damage is repairable in-house, which is worth establishing before anyone quotes a part with a factory lead time attached. For cars that keep meeting the same driveway, paint protection film across the nose, splitter, rockers, and the leading edges behind the wheels is the most cost-effective decision available.

Paint, and matching a car that has lived outdoors here

McLaren's multi-stage finishes have a translucent mid-coat carrying the effect pigment, so the number of coats determines the final depth of color and appears nowhere on the car. Matching one means building a let-down panel to establish the count and replicating it on the vehicle.

Every match starts with a spray-out card rather than a code, gets checked under corrected daylight lamps and again in real sunlight, and is blended into the adjacent panels rather than sprayed to a hard edge — the eye finds an edge far more readily than a gradual transition. On a car with as much surface curvature as these have, blending is not optional.

Exposed carbon aero adds a Southern California problem: clear coat over weave is UV-sensitive and yellows faster than paint does. Film over exposed carbon is worth more here than in most places.

I scraped the nose on a driveway. Does the whole clamshell need replacing?
