Aston Martin's structures are bonded, and that single fact governs almost everything about repairing one. The aluminum architecture under a DB11, DB12, DBS, Vantage, or DBX is held together primarily by structural adhesive and rivets rather than by welds — the glue is not a supplement to the joint, it is the joint. A shop that treats a bonded structure like a welded one produces a car that measures correctly and is not as strong as it was.

That construction is the reason these cars feel as rigid as they do, and it is also the reason the repair procedure is non-negotiable. Adhesive has a specified product, a specified surface preparation, an open time, and a cure schedule. None of that can be shortened to hit a delivery date, and none of it is visible afterward — which is exactly why it has to be documented.

Bonded aluminum: the glue is the structure

On a bonded aluminum architecture, the structural adhesive carries load across the joint and the rivets hold the parts in position while it cures. Welding a joint that the factory bonded is not a stronger substitute — it locally changes the aluminum's properties and gives you a joint the structure was never engineered around.

So repairs follow what Aston Martin specifies: the correct adhesive product, the correct surface preparation, joints separated only where the procedure allows, single-use rivets replaced rather than reused, and the full cure observed before the car moves to the next stage. Where a bonded structural component may not be repaired, it gets replaced at the factory joint.

Aluminum work happens in a separated area with dedicated tooling, because steel particles embedded in aluminum start galvanic corrosion that surfaces under the paint long after anyone would connect it to the repair. Straightening heat is measured, not judged — aluminum permanently anneals above its specified range while looking perfectly normal.

Composite and carbon panels

Aston Martin has long used composite body panels alongside aluminum, and carbon fiber appears on the more focused cars and across the option lists. Composite and carbon do not telegraph damage the way metal does: a panel can take a hit, spring back, and look untouched while the laminate inside has separated.

Those components are evaluated rather than assumed intact. Cosmetic carbon damage — clear-coat scratches, chipped edges, curb rash on a splitter — is genuinely repairable, with the weave matched across the repair so it disappears under clear. Damage that reaches the laminate, produces a soft spot, or sounds dull under a tap test is a different category, and we will tell you which one you have rather than refinishing over a question.

Exposed carbon has a Southern California problem worth naming: clear coat over weave is UV-sensitive and yellows noticeably faster than paint. Film over exposed carbon is one of the better protective decisions available on a car parked outdoors here.

Q by Aston Martin, stripes, and matching the actual car

The Q personalization program means a meaningful proportion of these cars wear colors that are effectively one-offs, sometimes with hand-applied stripes or contrasting roofs. Obtainability of a specific formula is something to establish at the estimate, not to discover once the car is in primer.

Matching starts with a spray-out card rather than a code — the code is a formula, not a description of your car after several years of Los Angeles sun. Multi-stage finishes get a let-down panel to establish the mid-coat count that produces the actual color, and every match is checked under corrected daylight lamps and again in real sunlight before it is accepted.

Where a repair crosses a hand-applied stripe or a two-tone break, continuing that line correctly is its own operation and gets quoted as one. A line that stops being straight at a panel edge is the kind of detail that cannot be un-seen afterward.

Driver assistance, and the DBX

The current cars carry a forward camera behind the windshield, forward radar, corner radar in the rear bumper for blind-spot and cross-traffic warning, ultrasonic park sensors, and on the DBX a surround-view camera system. Aim tolerances are fractions of a degree.

Bumper removal, windshield replacement, mirror replacement, ride-height changes on the DBX's air suspension, and any structural repair can each trigger a calibration requirement. We complete what the procedure specifies — statically with the correct targets at measured distances, dynamically on the road where required — and the report goes into your file. A post-repair scan with no fault codes does not establish that a camera is aimed correctly.
