Why We Look Up the OEM Repair Procedure on Every Job
Twenty-five years of experience tells you how cars used to be built. The procedure tells you how this one was.
Every major manufacturer publishes repair procedures for its vehicles: how to remove a component, whether a panel can be sectioned and exactly where, which welds to use and how many, which fasteners are single-use, what adhesive to apply and how to prepare the surface first, which systems require initialization or calibration afterward. These documents are specific to the model, the model year, and often the exact trim and equipment level.
The temptation to work from experience is real and understandable. A technician who has repaired a thousand quarter panels has an excellent instinct for how to repair a quarter panel. The problem is that the instinct was formed on the cars that came before, and the engineering underneath the sheet metal changes faster than the shapes on the outside do.
A concrete example: ultra-high-strength boron steel, now common in A-pillars, B-pillars, and rocker reinforcements, gets its strength from a heat-treatment process. Apply a torch to straighten it and you locally destroy that strength — the pillar looks correct and will fold in the next impact. Nothing about the panel's appearance tells you it is boron. The procedure does.
Another: adhesive-bonded and riveted joints on aluminum-intensive structures. Weld where the manufacturer specified a rivet-bonded joint and you have created a repair that is stiffer in the wrong place and weaker in another, with corrosion at the dissimilar-metal interface arriving a few years later. Again, the panel does not announce this. The procedure does.
The procedure also settles arguments about what a repair costs. When an adjuster questions why a job requires removing a headliner to access a roof rail, or why a bumper job includes a static camera calibration, the answer is not the shop's opinion — it is a printed page from the manufacturer stating the requirement. Documented procedures are the single most effective tool for getting a proper repair approved.
There is a liability dimension as well. Post-repair inspections and litigation over collision repairs have converged on one question: did the shop follow the manufacturer's published procedure? A shop that can produce the procedure and show it was followed is in a very different position from one relying on "we've always done it this way."
What this looks like day to day is unglamorous. Before a technician starts a job, someone pulls the procedures for that specific VIN, prints them, and puts them in the job file. The technician follows them. The file goes to the insurer with the supplement and, at the end, to the customer. It adds time to every repair, and it is the least negotiable part of how we work.
If you are choosing a shop, ask to see the procedure file on a job in progress. A shop that does this will show you immediately. A shop that does not will explain why it isn't necessary — which is your answer.
