Carbon Fiber Body Panels: What Can Be Repaired and What Has to Be Replaced

Carbon fiber does not dent. It absorbs an impact invisibly or it fails, and telling the difference is the whole job.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer appears on a growing share of the cars we see: hoods, roofs, diffusers, mirror caps, aero components, interior trim, and on some exotics, structural monocoques. It behaves nothing like sheet metal, and the instincts that serve a technician well on steel are actively misleading here.

Metal deforms. It dents, and the dent tells you where the energy went. Carbon fiber is stiff until it is not: it can take an impact, spring back, and look perfect while the layers inside have separated. That internal separation — delamination — is the failure mode that matters, and it is invisible from the outside.

So evaluation is the first and most important step. Light cosmetic damage — a clear-coat scratch, a chip at an edge, curb rash on a lip — is generally repairable, because the damage never reached the laminate. Damage that reaches the weave, produces a soft or spongy spot, shows a white stress mark, or makes a dull sound under a tap test, is a different category entirely. On structural components, evaluation may require ultrasonic inspection rather than a tap and a look.

Cosmetic repair on carbon is genuinely good work when the damage is limited to the surface. The clear coat is sanded, the affected area is filled or re-laminated as needed, weave alignment is matched, and the panel is re-cleared and polished. Matching a visible weave pattern across a repair is a craft skill; done well, it is undetectable, and done poorly it is obvious from ten feet away.

Structural carbon is a different conversation. Repairs to a load-bearing carbon structure require engineered layup schedules, specified resins, controlled cure temperatures, and in most cases manufacturer approval — and many manufacturers simply do not authorize repair of a damaged monocoque outside their own facilities. When we see structural carbon damage on an exotic, our job is to evaluate it honestly and tell you whether the car needs a factory-authorized path.

There is also a refinishing consideration. Carbon panels expand and contract at a different rate from adjacent metal panels, and clear coat over exposed weave is UV-sensitive. In Southern California sun, an unprotected or poorly cleared carbon panel yellows and clouds noticeably faster than paint. This is one of the strongest arguments for paint protection film over exposed carbon on a car that lives outdoors here.

For owners, the practical guidance is: do not assume a carbon panel is fine because it looks fine after an impact, and do not assume it is destroyed because it is scratched. Both assumptions are wrong about half the time. Have it evaluated by someone who works on these cars.
