ADAS Recalibration After a Collision: Static, Dynamic, and Why It Isn't Optional
A forward camera aimed one degree off is pointed several feet wide of its target at the far end of its range. Nothing on the dash will tell you.
Advanced driver-assistance systems — automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring, park assist — depend on sensors whose aim is measured in fractions of a degree. Cameras behind the windshield, radar behind the grille or in the bumper corners, ultrasonic sensors in the fascia, and in some cars lidar. When a repair disturbs any of them, or the geometry they reference, they must be recalibrated to a known standard.
The trigger list is broader than most owners expect. Windshield replacement, bumper cover removal, radar bracket work, grille replacement, mirror replacement, suspension or alignment changes, ride-height changes, and any structural repair that alters the relationship between a sensor and the vehicle's centerline. Some manufacturers require calibration after a wheel alignment alone, because lane-keeping references the thrust line of the vehicle.
Static calibration is done indoors with the car stationary. It requires a level floor, controlled lighting, sufficient clear space in front of and around the vehicle, and manufacturer-specific target boards positioned at exact distances and heights relative to the vehicle's centerline. The setup is finicky by design — the tolerances are tight because the consequences of being off are severe. Not every shop has the floor space or the floor flatness to do it properly.
Dynamic calibration is done by driving the vehicle under defined conditions: a specified speed range, clear lane markings, adequate daylight, minimal traffic, sometimes for a defined distance. Some vehicles require static first and then dynamic to complete. In dense Los Angeles traffic, finding conditions that satisfy a dynamic procedure is genuinely one of the scheduling problems of the job.
It is worth separating two things that get confused. A diagnostic scan reads fault codes. Calibration re-establishes a sensor's physical and logical reference. A camera that is aimed wrong will very often report no fault at all — it is working perfectly, at the wrong thing. That is why a clean scan is not evidence that calibration was performed.
How to verify it happened: ask for the calibration report. A properly completed calibration produces a document with the vehicle identification, the systems calibrated, the procedure used, pass results, and a time stamp. If a shop tells you the systems "self-calibrate while driving," that is true of a small number of specific systems on specific vehicles and false as a general statement.
This is also a place where insurers and shops sometimes disagree, because calibration adds hundreds of dollars to a repair that may otherwise look cosmetic. The resolution is documentation: the manufacturer's published procedure stating that the operation performed requires calibration. We attach it, and it gets approved.
The stakes are simple enough to state. These systems intervene in emergencies, at speed, on behalf of a driver who is not expecting to need them. They are worth the extra day.
