Paint Matching on Metallic and Tri-Coat Finishes

Two cars, same paint code, same year, visibly different color. This is normal, and it is why matching is done on the car and not from a book.

The paint code on your door jamb identifies a formula. It does not identify the color of your car today. Between factory batch variation, the paint plant that applied it, the years of Southern California sun that have been working on it since, and the difference between how a robot applies paint and how a spray gun does, the same code produces a visible range of real-world colors.

This is why every serious refinish starts with a spray-out card. The technician mixes the formula, sprays it on a test card using the same gun, the same pressure, the same number of coats, and the same flash times that will be used on the car, and then compares that card to the actual panel under multiple light sources. Only when the card matches does anything get sprayed on the vehicle.

Manufacturers know about batch variation and publish variant decks — several official alternates under one code, sometimes a dozen or more for a popular silver. Finding the right variant is part of the process. A shop that mixes to code and sprays directly onto the car is skipping the step where the actual matching happens.

Metallic paints add a second dimension: orientation. Those flakes lie down in a pattern determined by spray technique, gun setup, air pressure, distance, and flash time between coats. Two panels can be the identical formula and read differently because the flake is oriented differently — brighter head-on, darker at an angle. Matching a metallic means matching both the color and the way the flake lies.

Tri-coat finishes are harder again. A tri-coat has a ground coat, a translucent mid-coat carrying pearl or candy pigment, and a clear coat on top. The final color depends heavily on how many mid-coats were applied and how evenly, because the mid-coat is transparent — each pass deepens the effect. Mercedes-Benz designo finishes, Ferrari's three-stage reds and whites, and most premium pearl whites work this way. The only reliable way to match one is a let-down panel: a test card sprayed with a progressively increasing number of mid-coats, so the technician can see exactly how many produce your car's color, and then replicate that count exactly.

Then there is metamerism — the reason a match can look perfect under shop lights and wrong in the parking lot. Two colors made from different pigment combinations can appear identical under one light source and clearly different under another. Good matching is checked under corrected daylight lamps and again in actual sunlight before the car is delivered. If a shop only ever evaluates a match indoors, you will be the one who discovers the problem.

Even a perfect match usually gets blended into adjacent panels rather than sprayed edge to edge. That is deliberate, not a shortcut — the eye detects a hard line between two slightly different values far more easily than a gradual transition across a panel. On metallics and tri-coats especially, blending is what makes a repair disappear.

What this means for you as an owner: a refinish that is done properly takes longer than one that is not, and most of the extra time is spent before any paint touches the car. When you get the vehicle back, look at it outside, in daylight, from several angles, on both the repaired panel and the ones next to it. That is the test that matters, and we would rather you do it in our lot than in your driveway a week later.
