Case Study: Ford Bronco Full Customization
Applying luxury-shop process to a vehicle that is not, strictly speaking, a luxury vehicle. The result is the point.
Most of what comes through our doors in Beverly Hills is European and expensive. This Bronco was neither, and it turned into one of the more satisfying projects we have done — because the owner wanted the same standard of finish applied to a vehicle nobody expects to receive it.
The scope covered a painted grille with an illuminated front emblem, custom wheels, LED lighting, and color work across the exterior. The theme running through all of it was the same: take a vehicle with a deliberately rugged design language and execute the modifications with the precision usually reserved for a sports car, without softening what the vehicle is.
The grille and emblem work is the signature piece. The grille was removed rather than masked, prepared properly, and finished in high-quality automotive paint to match the vehicle. The emblem got the same treatment, with LED lighting installed behind it so the lettering illuminates. That last part is the detail that determines whether the whole thing reads as custom or as aftermarket — the light has to be even across the entire emblem, with no visible hot spots and no light bleeding at the edges, and the wiring has to be integrated cleanly enough that nothing is visible when the grille is back in place and nothing rattles or fails when the vehicle is actually driven off pavement.
Painting a grille is deceptively demanding work. The substrate is textured plastic in most cases, the geometry is full of intersecting slats and internal edges that are difficult to reach with a gun, and the part lives directly in the path of every rock the front tires throw. Preparation and the choice of a flexible, chip-resistant finish system matter far more here than on a body panel. Removing the part from the vehicle is not optional if you want paint on every surface that will be visible from an angle.
The wheels went larger and more aggressive, which on a Bronco is as much an engineering decision as a styling one. Offset, backspacing, load rating, and clearance to suspension and brake components all get verified against the actual vehicle before ordering, because a wheel that fits in a photograph and rubs at full lock is an expensive mistake. On a vehicle intended to be used, load rating in particular is not a detail to guess at.
LED lighting was integrated across the vehicle rather than bolted on. The distinction is wiring, mounting, and restraint: fixtures mounted to structure rather than to bodywork, wiring loomed and routed to factory standards, and enough discipline to stop before the vehicle looks like a light bar with a truck attached.
Color work tied it together, matched and blended to the existing finish so that painted components and factory panels read as one vehicle. This is the same paint-matching discipline described elsewhere in this journal — spray-out cards, evaluation under multiple light sources, and blending rather than hard edges — applied to a truck rather than a coupe. The process does not change because the vehicle costs less.
That is really the lesson of this build. The gap between a good custom job and a poor one is almost never the parts; it is whether components were removed before finishing, whether surfaces were properly prepared, whether the color was matched on the vehicle instead of from a code, and whether the wiring was done to a standard. Those are process decisions, and they are available on any vehicle.
